The agreement provides for legally binding and comprehensive conditions of employment, including minimum wage structures for all workers whose jobs are described in the agreement. The main agreement contains 38 separate technical schedules, each of which applies to a particular subsector of the industry. These technical calendars detail the specific tasks, tasks and technical activities of employees in the direct production process in these sectors. The main agreement is to regulate the conditions of employment of workers working in the metallurgical industry in manufacturing processes. The agreement, he says, is the result of a collective partnership based on understanding, respect and trust. The Committee on the Environment, Safety and Protection against workers` and trade union approaches to the enterprise, wages and other conditions of employment. The stressful and tedious negotiation process takes place at the sectoral level and is led by full-time civil servants from employers` and trade union organizations. The collective agreement, adopted in accordance with the Labour Relations Act, now enjoys collective agreement status and marks a turning point in which enterprise and work together recognize the devastating effects of the Covid 19 pandemic on businesses and workers throughout the metallurgical and mechanical engineering sector, says Seifsa. Seifsa, unions adopt the main status quo agreement Once the velvet community abounds, the main agreement becomes legally binding for all employers in the industry and all violations such as underpayment of wages or non-payment of public holidays are enforced by bargaining council employees. The five unions that signed the agreement are the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa, Solidarity, the United Association of South Africa, the Metal and Electrical Workers Union of South Africa and the South African Equity Workers Association. “In response, we all agreed to block existing terms of employment over a 12-month period and freeze current wage rates until June 30, 2021 to allow the industry to adapt to a post-Covid 19 reality. This is unprecedented, not only in this sector, but also in the country in general,” says Trentini. When the agreement is published in the government scoreboard, it becomes legally binding for all employers working in the sector and for workers who fall within the scope of the main agreement.

Hence the next important question. “The agreement gives our industry the opportunity to preserve jobs and seeks solutions that help reverse not only the fate of the sector, but also the economy as a whole,” said Trentini. In addition, the main agreement has the following benefits for employers and workers in the sector: the 19 employers` organizations affiliated with the Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of Southern Africa (Seifsa) and the five trade unions in the sector formally adopted the status quo agreement concluded in August 2020-2021 on 1 September. The main contract manual is very important for all employers in the metallurgical and mechanical engineering sector, and not just for those who are members of SEIFSA-affiliated associations. The main contract is a collective agreement between employers` organisations and trade unions, which form the Council of Metallurgical and Mechanical Industries. The agreement provides for extended terms and conditions of employment for approximately 320,000 planned workers (including workers provided by employment agencies) who are employed in more than 10,000 companies in the sector.
